The underwater world of Ras Mohammed

The national park is located at the intersection of the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba. The name Ras Mohammed means "Mohammed's head" in Arabic. The reserve, opened in 1989, consists of terrestrial and underwater parts.

Diving in Ras Mohammed is among the top ten due to the unique and rich underwater world in the area. The park's dive sites can be visited by both beginners and divers with diving experience. It is best to get to the sites from Sharm el-Sheikh by bus or car - the park is 25 km away from the resort town.

Diving in Ras Mohammed is carried out from many dive sites, among which the greatest interest among divers are Shark Reef, Anemone City, Shark Observatory, Iolanta Reef, Jackfish Alley, Marsa Bareika, Stingray Stand.

Anemone City will surprise divers with a beautiful garden of anemones located at a depth of 14 metres. Shark Reef is home to tuna, barracuda and large groupers. Iolanta Reef is almost entirely covered with soft multi-coloured corals of unprecedented beauty. It is a haven for moray eels, turtles, huge napoleon fish and eels. Next to the reef at a depth of 90 metres lies the wreck of the dry cargo ship Yolanta.

Ras Mohammed attracts quite a few recreational divers. It is home to one of the world's best wrecks, the ship Tistlegorm. Turning west from the reserve, after 13 kilometres you can dive to the wreck of the steamer Dunraven.

The waters of the national park are home to about 150 species of coral and thousands of fish species. The rich marine fauna and flora is due to the favourable geographical location - currents pass close to the peninsula and the reserve, bringing plankton and nutrients for local marine life. Abundant coral reefs and gardens of large gorgonaria provide shelter.

Large flocks of barracuda, sharks, tuna and carrunks can be found in Ras Mohammed Park. In the summer, huge schools of different fish arrive in the vicinity of the reserve, giving divers the opportunity to observe the amazing underwater world.

One of the distinctive features of the dive sites in Ras Mohammed is the crystal clear water. In good weather, visibility is 50 metres. These sites are visited by a huge number of tourists who want to master scuba diving. For this reason, experienced divers choose early morning or the second half of the day for diving.
