What the depths of the sea hide

Egypt has always been a crossing point for waterways. But the strong underwater currents, narrow passages and reefs in the resort area have made it the final resting place for many ships. Among the shipwrecks near Sharm el Sheikh the most famous and attractive for divers are Thistlegorm, Dunraven, Million Hope.

Thistlegorm

The Thistlegorm is the most famous shipwreck in the waters of the Red Sea. Having made several commercial voyages to South and North America, the ship was tasked with transporting military equipment and armaments to resupply the British Army in 1941. The ship left Glasgow for Alexandria, anchored at the entrance to the Suez Canal awaiting permission. While anchored, the Germans launched an air attack. During the bombardment, the ammunition being carried detonated and the ship broke in half, sinking in just 10 minutes.

Fifteen years after the accident, the famous Jacques Cousteau discovered the wreck - the ship was quite well preserved. Everything remained in its place, including transported motorized vehicles, trucks, weapons. Despite the long stay under water and the damage caused - the ship spent eight decades at the bottom of the sea, interest in it remains in our time.

Thistlegorm is located between the west coast of Sinai and Shaab Ali Reef, in the Gobal Strait, north of Ras Mohammed. Many marine life can be found here and the underwater flora is breathtaking in its beauty and diversity.

Dunraven

The British ship Dunraven was carrying gold, spices, and timber from India when it sank in the spring of 1876 at the southern end of the Shaab Mahmood reefs, near the South Cardinal lighthouse. The ship was breached by the reef, spending 14 hours in unsuccessful salvage attempts. The ship eventually slipped off the reef and went to the botto

In the process of falling, the ship flipped over, splitting in two as it hit the bottom. In this form, it lies at the reef at a depth of 20-30 meters, resembling a huge cave. The place where the ship went to the bottom was discovered by German oilmen only 100 years later. Initially the ship was not even identified, only after the discovery of a piece of china with the inscription Dunraven the history of the ship was restored.

After spending almost 150 years underwater, the ship's hull has become completely overgrown with coral, making it home to a variety of marine life. Diving in this popular dive site always captures the imagination of explorers, making them return again and again to explore the mysteries yet unexplored.

Million Hope

The Japanese dry cargo ship Million Hope left the port of Aqaba in Jordan in 1996 loaded with 26,000 tons of potash-phosphate fertilizers. Its course was to the coast of Taiwan. On the next day of the voyage, the ship ran aground in the coastal reefs near Sharm el-Sheikh.

The reasons why the Million Hope went to the bottom are not fully understood. As versions are called a fire or violation of the rules of navigation and speed regime. The crew, which included mostly Filipinos, did not want to leave the ship for a long time, but, realizing the imminence of the wreck, evacuated.

Diving on this rack is done from the shore. You can get here only by zodiacs, as the reef shoal is too big.
